January 2005 A mild, dry and sunny start to the year!  Mean max. temp. 8.6°C (+2.0); mean min. temp 3.8°C (+1.7); rainfall 31.5 millimetres (62%); sunshine 87.0 hours (157%). February 2005 A mild first half of February then colder, particularly last week. Rather dull but dry. Mean max. temp. 6.8°C (-0.4); mean min. temp. 1.8°C (0.0); rainfall 27.1 millimetres (77%); sunshine 62.6 hours (86%). Coldest February since 1996; dullest since at least 1997. Winter 2004/2005 (December/February) A milder, drier and sunnier than average Winter! Mean max. temp. 7.8°C (+0.8); mean min. temp. 3.0°C (+0.7); rainfall 85.9 millimetres (62%); sunshine 219.0 hours (125%). Only the 6th mildest Winter in the last 10 years; driest Winter since 1991/1992.
26th March 2005 Rainfall 11.2 millimetres. Not a significant amount of rainfall but nonetheless the wettest day since 18th November 2004 (illustrating the dry nature of the preceding Winter).
March 2005 A little warmer than average March; drier and duller than normal; 4th consecutive drier than average month; 25% of March sunshine occurred on just 2 days (17th & 18th). Mean max. temp. 10.8°C (+0.7); mean min. temp. 4.2°C (+0.9); rainfall 35.9 millimetres (84%); sunshine 84.8 hours (79%). Wettest March since 2001; dullest March since 1998. Sharp temperature contrast between first and second halves of month: Mean max. temp. 1st/15th 7.1°C, 16th/31st 14.2°C; mean min. temp. 1st/15th 0.7°C, 16th/31st 7.4°C. April 2005 A warm April, with rainfall 10% below average, and sunshine close to normal. 5th consecutive drier than average month, but no April records broken. Mean max. temp. 14.5°C (+1.6); mean min. temp. 5.4°C (+1.1); rainfall 39.8 millimetres (90%); sunshine 143.5 hours (98%). For full details see Daily Weather Observations - April 2005 page.
27th May 2005 Max. temp 30.3°C, the highest temperature recorded in May since records began on 1st May 1972, and first time 30°C exceeded in May. Next highest temperature in May since 1972 was 28.4°C on 24th May 1989.
May 2005 6th consecutive drier than average month and driest May since 2001. Mean temperature a little above average but the coolest May since 1996. Sunshine similarly a little above average and the sunniest May since 2001. Mean max. temp 17.3°C (+0.5); mean min. temp. 7.6°C (+0.4); rainfall 35.3 millimetres (75%); sunshine 212.0 hours (112%). 7th June 2005 Slight ground frost (grass minimum temperature -0.1°C). First ground frost recorded in June since 2nd June 1991 (-1.0°C). The only other occurrences of ground frost in June since 1972 are 1989 (2), 1986 (1), and 1977 (1).
19th June 2005 Hottest June day since 19th June 2000. Max. temp. 31.7°C.
June 2005 A warm, dry and sunny June. Coolest June since 2002; rainfall below average for the 7th consecutive month; 3rd successive June with sunshine above 200 hours. July 2005 For the first 3 weeks July promised to a very sunny month, with 163.1 hours sunshine from 1st to 21st, but then the last 10 days of the month yielded only 16.6 hours sunshine, resulting in a below average monthly total. It was the 8th consecutive drier than average month, whilst the mean temperature was just a fraction of a degree above average. Mean max. temp. 22.1°C (-0.1); mean min. temp 13.2°C (+0.7); rainfall 33.8 millimetres (78%); sunshine 179.7 hours (94%). For full details see Daily Weather Observations - July 2005  page.
22nd August 2005 Rainfall 16.5 millimetres - wettest day since 18th November 2004. This increased the August rainfall to date to 53.4 millimetres, now in excess of the 30 Year (1971/2000) mean for the month of 49.6 millimetres. This will ensure that August will be the first month since November 2004 without below average rainfall.
August 2005 An unusual month in that the mean temperature failed to exceed the long term average, as have so many months in recent years. The coolest August since 1998, in fact. The wettest August since 1999 and the first month since November 2004 with above average rainfall. September 2005 A warm and sunny September, with average rainfall. Mean max. temp. 20.9°C (+2.2); mean min.temp. 12.0°C (+1.5); rainfall 59.5 millimetres (104%); sunshine 174.1 hours (123%). 27th October 2005 Max. temp. 20.0°C. Warmest day in the last week of October since at least 1972. Previous highest temperature in last week of October 18.5°C on 30th October 2001.
30th October 2005 Max. temp. 19.3°C. 2nd warmest day in last week of October since 1972 (see entry above).
October 2005 A very mild October, but not quite as mild as October 2001 (mean temp. 0.3°C higher). Rainfall and sunshine both marginally above average. 2nd November 2005 Max. temp. 17.5°C. Warmest November day since 2nd November 1984 (max. temp. 17.8°C).
November 2005 For temperature, a month of two halves, firstly very mild, then cold. Mean max. temp. 1st/15th 13.4°C, 16th/30th 5.2°C; mean min. temp. 1st/15th 7.5°C, 16th/30th 0.3°C (this latter mean min. value is lower than the 30 Year (1973/2002) average for any winter month). Similar imbalance with rainfall, rainfall 1st/15th 39.0 millimetres, 16th/30th 7.5 millimetres. For whole month mean max. temp 9.3°C (-0.3), mean min. temp. 3.9°C (-0.8); rainfall 46.5 millimetres (89%); sunshine 108.5 hours (159%). Sunniest November since at least 1998, despite very dull end to month (sunshine 1st/21st 99.1 hours, 22nd/30th 9.4 hours). Coldest November since 1998. Driest November since 2001. December 2005 A dry and very sunny December, with temperatures about average overall. Mean max. temp. 7.1°C (-0.1); mean min. temp. 2.6°C (-0.4); rainfall 22.6 millimetres (43%); sunshine 95.9 hours (201%).
