Regular visitors to the Winter Garden at Anglesey Abbey (28 km NE of Royston) will be familiar with the small grove of dazzling white-barked Himalayan birch (betula utilis var. jacquemontii) at its northern end. In the Spring thousands of Tulipa 'Little Beauty' bedeck it, as seen in the above photograph taken at 1408 GMT on 3rd May 2013. Closer examination of these flowers reveals a subtle blue and white centre which does not detract from the impression of an overall carpet of red which initially strikes the visitor. The Winter Garden at Anglesey Abbey is now acknowledged to be one of the finest of its type in the country. It was conceived in 1996 and gained inspiration from the smaller scale Winter Garden at the nearby Cambridge University Botanic Garden, and after 15 or so years in the making it has now matured into the magnificent spectacle it is today. This day was one of the few in the Spring this year with glorious weather, with the temperature reaching a maximum of 20.1°C (at Royston), which is 4.5°C above the 30 Year (1981/2010) average for this day, and sunshine of 13.6 hours being accumulated. The unseasonably cold March and early April combined with a dry end to March and a dry April held back this years oilseed rape crop but by mid-May a partial recovery had taken place, and whilst the familiar the swathes of yellow had become a feature across the district some areas of an immature green crop still remained. In this view at Poorsland mid-way between Royston and Barley at 0800 GMT on 13th May 2013 the flowers appear to be fully out but did not reach maximum intensity for another week or so, after which the seed pods appeared on the lower stalks and the flowers started to wane. The black barn featured in this picture is a notable landmark passed by users of the B1039 Royston to Saffron Walden road before the long descent to Wardington Bottom in the direction of the village of Barley (which lies beyond the distant ridge). The cloudy skies visible here predominated for the greater part of the day and only 3.6 hours sunshine was recorded. A W wind of mean speed 11 knots gusting to 18 knots was rustling the oilseed rape at this time in a temperature of 10.6°C. The highest temperature reached on this day was a rather cool 14.6°C. The Italian Garden at Wrest Park (27 km SSW of Royston) has become a reliable showcase of colour in the separate Spring and Summer/Autumn displays of flowers since its restoration in 2011 (as part of various other restoration projects in the Park). This is a last gasp view for this year's Spring flowers (as seen at 1433 GMT on 25th May 2013) as the fine display of tulips in evidence is well past its peak at this point and is expected to be replaced with the Summer bedding plants very soon. Along the wall leading to the arch through which this garden is accessed is the magnificent and extensive wisteria fully out in bloom at this time. After a small depression drifted off the North Sea and over eastern England on the previous day giving wet and cool (maximum temperature only 10.1°C) conditions the weather on 25th was in complete contrast. The temperature reached 16.4°C (at Royston) after an overnight minimum of 3.0°C and 11.8 hours sunshine was recorded. The following two days of the Bank Holiday weekend were even better with sunshine of 15.4 hours on 26th and 14.5 hours on 27th. The highest temperature recorded was 20.0°C (on 26th).
