| An attractive building and well known Royston landmark is The White Bear and Lodge PH in Kneesworth Street, seen here on 4th May 2011 at 1545 GMT. Kneesworth Street is on the route of the old Roman road Ermine Street which ran from London to Lincoln and York. In this photograph the mini-roundabout at the junctions of Palace Gardens (to rear of photographer) and Mill Road with Kneesworth Street is shown, whilst the sunny disposition of the pub front garden, canopies and seating is emphasised by the clear skies in evidence. In fact, sunshine predominated on this day and had accumulated 13.7 hours by the end of the day. A SE breeze of 4 knots gusting to 10 knots is drifting across the town at this time in a temperature of 15.0°C (day maximum 16.2°C). | The potato crop growing in these furrows on the Green Street allotment site in Royston has been decimated by two damaging frosts on the early mornings of 3rd and 4th May 2011. The growing haulms have virtually disappeared in this picture taken on 9th May (at 1039 GMT) but two weeks later they had re-grown to their former size. This scenario is likely to have been repeated all over the local area and further afield in East Anglia and is not particularly unusual at this time of the year. This setback to the crop will put back harvesting by a week or two and yields may be reduced. This was yet another very sunny day in a very sunny month, the 200 hours mark for bright sunshine having been exceeded on 25th. Sunshine on 9th itself was 13.4 hours and a maximum temperature of 21.5°C was achieved. | The Organic Kitchen Garden at the grand Jacobean Audley End House (17 km ESE of Royston) has gone from strength to strength in recent years as English Heritage has restored it to its former glory. It now grows a variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers, including 120 apple trees and 40 to 50 plum and pear varieties. In this picture (taken on 21st May 2011 at 1228 GMT) is an example of the magnificent display of irises (also peonies) bedecking both sides of a long avenue. The glasshouses in the background house peaches, nectarines and grapes, the latter in Victorian times being skilfully produced for 10 months of the year! The gardens are very dry after the long drought (only 13.5 millimetres rainfall at Royston since 1st March) but appear to be holding up remarkably well. |
